The enchantment found in exploring an island retreat accessible
only by boat, available only by reservation (scheduled departures are from
Hampton Point Marina at the North end of St. Simons Island) is unsurpassed in
Little St. Simons Island, the northernmost of the Golden Isles.
Originally purchased in 1908 by businessman Philip
Berolzheimer as a source for red cedar used in the manufacture of pencils, the
10,000-acre barrier island premiers as a family-owned, private retreat. Limited
numbers of guests are seasonally offered the opportunity to explore its' natural
wonders and to experience the enchanting beauty of pristine, maritime woodlands
marching down to seven miles of wide, untouched sandy, shell-filled beaches.
Interpretive nature and wildlife tours offer visitors a chance sighting of
native species. Alligators, bottle-nosed dolphins, rare fallow deer, raccoons,
opossum, turtles and a vast collection of native and migratory birds make Little
St. Simons a natural observation point for birders. Other activities affording
exploration include horseback trails excursions, hiking and bicycling. Avid
watersports lovers find canoeing, beach picnics, fishing, motorboating among
enjoyable activities. Fly-fisherman catch trout, redfish, and flounder while
sunbathers, swimmers and shellers relax joyfully under long, sunny, summer
days.
